One of Southlands best kept secrets, this heavily forested island offers fishing, tramping, diving, snorkeling, kayaking, golf and scenic flights. Stewart Island is also a bird watchers paradise with native birds such as Kaka, Bellbirds, Tui, Robins, Fernbirds, Dotterels and of course the Kiwi. Stewart Island is also home to New Zealand fur seals, penguins and a shearwater colony. It has a 700 km coastline, but there are only 20 km of roads! The eastern lowlands are forest, right to the water's edge. Paterson Inlet almost cuts the Island in half. It's popular for boat-trips and recreational fishing and diving. Mason Bay, on the Island's West Coast is much different. A 12 mile crescent of sandy beach, with huge sand-hills and tussock and scrub in place of forest, it's wild and swept by westerly gales.
