Fiordland has been designated part of the Te Wahipounamu World Heritage area in recognition of its world significance as a natural treasure and is renowned as a Sightseeing and Walking Capital. The Fiordland National Park embraces a vast area of rugged, pimeval wilderness. It's the world's largest National Park and is also a world heritage area, with spectacular fiords reaching into rainforest-clad hills backed by mountains and lakes. The Fiordland Lakes are beautiful, the greatest being Manapouri. The hub of the region is Te Anau, next to Lake Te Anau. Te Anau is renowned as the "Walking Capital of the World", close to the main southern walking tracks of Milford, Hollyford, Routeburn, Greenstone and Kepler. The township looks across the lake to the Kepler mountains, with the Murchison Mountains to the north. Another main feature of Te Anau are the Te Anau caves. On the other side of the lake, easily accessible by boat, the caves are geologically active and are full of thousands of glow-worms.
