North Otago has a wide variety of landscapes, everything from clean green rolling hill country to stunning beaches and wetlands. The coast of North Otago is dotted with small settlements and clusters of cribs with spectacular views out to the vast blue Pacific. Well-known for its eco-tourism, coastal wildlife to be discovered includes Fur Seals, rare Yellow Eyed Penguins, and little Blue Penguins. The beach at Moeraki is littered with spherical boulders the size of small cars, and their origins are one of the natural wonders of the world. Inland, the Gold Rush in the 19th Century has left its mark and there are ample opportunities to discover more. Gold mining is still carried out at Macraes today. In the Waitaki district the town of Oamaru with its classic Victorian buildings built from creamy white limestone offers some excellent antique and collectibles shops. There are a number of Heritage Trails in this area. The Janet Frame (one of New Zealand's greatest authors) Trail links Oamaru, the town in which she grew up, with her "Waimaru". The town of Palmerston is the gateway to the Otago Goldfields Heritage Trail. The Ocean to Alps Trail is one of the finest scenic drives in New Zealand
