Nelson/Golden Bay
Nelson is an enjoyable place to stay. Its sunny weather, golden sandy
bays and productive valleys are complemented by the craftspeople who
find inspiration from the natural environment. The scenery is picture-postcard
perfect with bays hemmed by lush bush, turquoise waters and valleys
of fields ripe with apples, grapes, berries and hops. The Nelson region
sports several vineyards and a boutique brewery. A scenic winding road
out of Nelson takes you to Takaka, gateway to the unspoilt beaches and
clear waters of Golden Bay. On the way, stop off at Pu Pu Springs, with
an ecosystem unlike anywhere else in the world. Nelson is famous for
golden beaches, national parks, artists, boutique wineries and seafood.
The eastern coastline runs parallel to a mountain range with two skifields,
down to Kaikoura, famous for its whales and sealife.
Marlborough
Peace and tranquility are the hallmarks of Marlborough's deep inlets
and maze of waterways. Marlborough is most famous for it's vineyards,
delicious foods, scenic boat tours and forest walks. Fishing, diving,
kayaking, sailing and cruising are recommended around the coast. The
area around Blenheim is renowned for its premium wine, and each February
a food and wine festival celebrates the region's produce.
North Otago
North Otago has a wide variety of landscapes, everything from clean
green rolling hill country to stunning beaches and wetlands. The coast
of North Otago is dotted with small settlements and clusters of cribs
with spectacular views out to the vast blue Pacific. Well-known for
its eco-tourism, coastal wildlife to be discovered includes Fur Seals,
rare Yellow Eyed Penguins, and little Blue Penguins. The beach at Moeraki
is littered with spherical boulders the size of small cars, and their
origins are one of the natural wonders of the world. Inland, the Gold
Rush in the 19th Century has left its mark and there are ample opportunities
to discover more. Gold mining is still carried out at Macraes today.
In the Waitaki district the town of Oamaru with its classic Victorian
buildings built from creamy white limestone offers some excellent antique
and collectibles shops. There are a number of Heritage Trails in this
area.
